Daniel Carter – GIS Technician & Cartographer

Daniel Carter

I am a highly motivated, skilled and experienced GIS professional with years of experience in information systems, project management, surveying, remote UAS operations and Geographic Information Systems.

Early Life

I was born in Salem, the capitol city of Oregon. From a young age I had a fascination with computes and orienteering. Many of my days were either spent tinkering with electronics in my room or exploring the wonderful natural beauty of Oregon.

Military Enlistment

After graduating from La Pine High School in 2008, I enlisted in the United States Air Force as an Aircraft Electrical and Environmental Systems Mechanic. For 4 years I was stationed at McChord Air Force Base (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord), during this time I deployed for 6 and a half months to Kuwait where I was the only mechanic of my specialty at that location during the duration of the deployment. This experience taught me a lot about self reliance, resiliency and perseverance. I finished up the last year and a half of my enlistment stationed near Seoul, South Korea.

Back to School

Having served 6 years in the military and separating as a mature adult gave me the opportunity to reflect on my life, professional goals, and my future. I decided I would take advantage of this clarity and return to school to chase a degree in Information Systems. Early in my schooling I discovered GIS as a career field and a passion. It married the two things I was passionate about, computers, and orienteering. I completed a general associates from Linn-Benton Community College with a focus on Computer Science and officially began working towards my goal of becoming a GIS professional. After much research I found a program at Western Oregon University (WOU) that would allow for me to attain a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Information Systems and a Minor in Geographic Systems. I graduated from WOU in 2020 Magna Cum Laude.

GIS Professional and Beyond

I have known since a young age that I have wanted to dedicate my professional career to public service and strengthening my community. I put a lot of intentionality into working in GIS in the public sector after graduating from WOU. I have worked as a Field Survey Technician, Cartographer and GIS Technician. I think that this broad array of experience along with my educational background in Information Systems make me a strong, well rounded professional. I look forward to strengthening my portfolio and experiences as a career GIS Professional.
